Sakamoto was bron on August 17, 1953 in Seattle, Washington to Japanese-American parents. Interested in design at a youthful age, there was always an appreciation for design in the household.

During the course of studying graphic design in college, Sakamoto acquired a job at a local prominent jewelry design studio and became interested in the art form. Eager to experiment with precious metals and gemstones, the materials offered a new medium in which he could express himself.

Concept 1 was established in 1979 in Los Angeles, CA in an effort to expose Sakamoto's design to a national audience. The Concept 1 name would later change to Sakamoto in 1995.

Sakamoto's work has often been described as miniature sculpture in the sense that every angle is appreciated. Many of the designs are bold and aggressive with architectural and far-eastern influences. The common thread of the collection is his sense of proportion, play of positive and negative space and lack of purely decorative elements.

Rather than a certain "look" or a unnatural created style, the design of Sakamoto implies a discipline that evokes the essense of an idea in the fewest of strokes. "The best designs in any field is a universal language with very little relevance of time and place". Sakamoto's work is meant to speak this language.
