In the world of gemstones the word magic is associated with the mystical Alexandrites. These gems are from the mineral Chrysoberyl discovered in the early 19th century in Czarist Russia.
The stone is known for its’ magical ability to change color. The colors range from a cool green in daylight, to a raspberry red tone indoors under incandescent light. Since the old national colors of Imperial Russia were red and green, it was named after Czar Alexander II on the occasion of his coming of age.
What makes these color-change stones so collectible is it's rarity. Today newly mined Alexandrites are hard to find. One sees them more often in estate jewelry, offered at auction with impressive price tags.
Originally discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains, the mines have long since closed. We are all gratefull that today some sources have been found in Brazil, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. This is an extraordinary matched pair from Brazil.
